Audrey,

Thank you Dr. Nelson for great session. I have been looking for a resource on how to speak up specially when I need to address a conflict and did not realize how gender plays a role in this. Knowing how gender plays a role I now know how to address conflict depending on my audience and appreciate all the resources that you provided for further learning.
Warm Regards

Today’s presentation was exceptional. As a young women working in a male dominated industry- I left with a ton of tips and tricks to better understand how I can effectively handle conflict and communicate better in tough situations
Thank you so much!

Comment from the host, Mike Godwin:
This is the 2nd or 3rd time I have had Audrey do the women leader program in her 7-8 years with us and I believe it is the best women’s program we have. Her 3 books on the subject give her great content, she has immaculate credentials and her presentation style is as good as anyone we have. She is very “take charge” of the day in a pleasant way, the audience loves her and flocks to her at breaks. Her activities and table interactions are interesting, fun and perfectly support her message. The day flies by and is one of my favorites.

Good morning Audrey,
Thank you for teaching the Women’s Guide to Leadership class yesterday and for your time afterwards. It has got me thinking about and noticing my own behaviors especially around the value of my time vs. the value of others time and how to take responsibility without apologizing.

What people are saying about a Women’s Guide to Leadership:
I learned many aspects of the importance of women in leadership’s roles. It is okay to challenge and question authority. It is important to stop apologizing and that your credibility gets diminished. This course should be a part of every companies “new hive” program; done quarterly for all employees.

Consulting/Coaching In this roller coaster ride I’ve felt the perspective and guidance you’ve provided me have armed me with the most impactful words and best messaging. Thank you!!! Because of it I’ve had more confidence that my message would be received as legitimate, reasonable, and professional. I’ll admit there have been times I was not as bold in language and action as you’ve suggested as I navigated this path and found my voice. Yet, it has resulted in a positive outcome for the situation at hand and I attribute our work together as the significant contributing factor.

Hello Audrey,
I attended this luncheon (Northern Colorado Human Resource Association) and loved the very brief information you provided on this important subject. I’m writing to inquire about what kind of training you offer in this area; length of class, cost, etc.? There are many women, and men, in my organization who would value from this information.

To: Potential Client for Audrey Nelson, PhD, Nelson Communication
I highly recommend Audrey Nelson, PhD for your consideration. As Vice President of the Governance/Board Development Practice for FCC Services, Denver, CO,I was responsible for creating advanced, high profile programs in leadership development and governance for Boards of Directors, CEO’s, executive and senior staff for the Farm CreditSystem, a $290 billion-dollar financial cooperative with 14,000 employees across the United States.
I contracted Audrey Nelson to provide two communication programs for the Leadership
Development Program:
The Art of Conscious Communication
Victors Without Victims
Each of these programs and Ms. Nelson have been consistently rated in the excellence level (4.7 and higher on a “5” scale) with many outstanding comments from executive participants for over fifteen years. I attribute this high esteem to Ms. Nelson’s ability to design communication programs and experiences that are practical, understandable and immediately usable in an ever-changing and more complex communication environment. Her unique ability to deliver content with a blend of expertise, humor and strong presence created a sophisticated, yet approachable learning atmosphere. As head of these important System programs, I needed someone who would listen to me as I guided her about our company and audience to help her be successful and also needed her flexibility to adjust as needed as the program evolved. Audrey was a joy to work with. The Farm Credit System composition of senior-executive managers has changed from 90% male participants when I hired her to about 65/35 male to female participants today. It was critical to have an instructor in the communication programs who could handle different audience compositions. The Leadership Development Program became the top-rated leadership program by CEO’s and executive participants in the Farm Credit System. Audrey Nelson is a contributor to this success over her many years of partnership with FCC Services in this program.
Yours truly,

In an effort to not offend, I would preface potentially inflammatory statements with disclaimers (Audrey identified these forms of speech) until coworker pointed it out and how it diminishes what I am saying. Thanks for a great session. Elena Winter HR Business Partner Meadow Gold

Hello Audrey, I work for AmeriGas Propane – we are a national distributor of propane. This year we have just launched a women’s group called Women’s Impact Network. The propane industry is a male dominated industry and we are trying to achieve a better gender balance at AmeriGas. My colleagues have attended your workshops and I have read your books and we like your messaging around gender communication. We think that would resonate with our group. I wondered if you ever do any online webinars on this topic? Our geography makes a live event not practical. Please let me know?
A fan,
Justine Staub Director, Communications & Workforce Development AmeriGas Propane
I’ve had the incredible opportunity to participate in two different sessions led by Audrey, the first event being a session hosted by the Leadership Initiative at the Denver Convention Center. This inspired our company’s women’s network to host a half-day workshop focused on He Speaks, She Speaks: What Different Things They Say for women in leadership. Audrey’s presentations are colored with great examples, and she is phenomenal at interacting with the audience in both keynote and workshop settings. She doesn’t just scratch the surface of communications concepts, but really dives in, imparting a wealth of knowledge and strategies in a short time. Even in an anomalous corporate culture, the topics Audrey covers are incredibly relevant. I love that I walked away with actionable steps and tips to improve my communication style and I’m confident that I will become a better influencer after participating in Audrey’s Women in Leadership workshop.

Thank you for the wonderful start to the week – I enjoyed the morning session and your keynote on Monday! One of my best friends (and dearest colleagues) has often called me out on over-apologizing, but it wasn’t until I heard it in the video you played that it truly hit home. I thought to myself, “is that REALLY what I sound like?” Since then, I have caught myself apologizing a few times where a simple “excuse me” was appropriate – and this morning, I actually caught myself before I said anything and course-corrected in the moment. Victory! (Or at least one small step in the right direction!)

- She was great. Clean, concise, and applicable information regardless of job assignment.
- Good training on communication
- Very energetic. Great interaction. Funny. Really engaging speaker. Really interesting presentation. Would love to see her speak again.
- Audrey gave insightful, clear, and applicable information on communication. This will help me in presentations, conflict resolution, listening with empathy, etc. The best presentation so far.
- Appreciated her point of view and insight into listening skills, first impressions, and the differences of communication between men and women. I would have liked more concrete examples of how to deal with specific communication issues. Ie. Specific examples like how she touched on the one interrupter in the group setting.
- Great presenter, very energetic. A lot of information that people probably know but definitely need reminded of. My favorite presenter of the week.
- Good stuff, good presenter.

I have attended industry conferences for many years. Very few keynote speakers have been memorable. Audrey Nelson, as a keynote speaker, was not only memorable but the content of her presentation continues to resonate with me years later. I am very happy to have recently recommended her as our keynote speaker for a conference that I am chairing next spring. I look forward to working with her and her professional staff.

Good Afternoon Audrey,
I enjoyed this seminar very much and the only piece I regret is that I did not bring any Women Co-Workers with me. I have been a leader in the Food Industry for several years and found the content enjoyable, as well as, thought provoking. I loved the opportunity to network with people from other companies and I hope to continue the dialog. I have already practiced not utilizing “tag questions” just this morning and I achieved my goal! I would recommend this seminar to any leader that has the desire to improve or sharpen their skills in an ever-changing environment.
You are a very inspiring presenter!
I am also enjoying the articles and I intend on watching one video daily for as long as I have this site.
Thanks again and if you come back into the Columbus Area, I will highly recommend your seminar to some of my partners.
Sincerely, Jan Roeske Director of Area Operations The Wendy’s Company One Dave Thomas Blvd. Dublin, OH. 43017

Hi Audrey, This is my feedback for today: I especially took acknowledgement of the 12 A’s and the way we talk as women talk. I realized, I am rarely assertive these days and I take a back seat more often then I should. I apologize profusely trying to find my worth/ credibility and I rarely get either. I am a strong women, but cannot execute that well. I am afraid of conflict or that I may be wrong…I learned its ok to be wrong, unsure and scared of the reaction of other people. I also cried a little at the video you showed as I have 2 girls and 1 boy. I am scared that my girls will fall into the same pattern I have fallen into. I love the video and would love to share that with my girls. It empowered me.
Which book should I start with, then move on to in order? Thank you so much for you time today. I feel like every word resonated, now I just need to execute.

Great message today! Thank you!
- Women’s Intuition – Women pay more attention to moods, likes/dislikes, etc.
- Emotional Endurance at Work – Don’t let your emotions dictate your behavior / Keep emotions in check – Let it out at ‘Home’
- The Trick Question – Tag Question…’I need the report tomorrow. Can you do it?’ – Must speak in declarative sentences – be assertive and direct.
- Women and the Split-Ear Advantage – Listening while evaluating facial expressions, voice, gestures, and posture, etc.
- Most Asked Questions About Gender Communication – How and why do men/women communicate the way they do…is it nature or nurture?
- A Paradigm for Understanding How Men and Women Communicate – Women are indirect, what’s the process, interdependent, and by feeling instead of, as men do, by being direct, having a goal, being independent, and based on content.
- Don’t Qualify it! Just Say it! – Women use qualifiers. “Well, no”; “It’s time to go, I guess”; “It seems to me” should not be used in your conversation.
- Men and Women in Conflict: The Roles She Plays: Taking care of others; Taking a backseat; Acting dumb; Being the power behind the throne; Suffering silently; Place nice; Waiting to be saved; Being seen, not heard; Sacrificing yourself for others; Being a people pleaser; Not rocking the boat; and Keeping and making the peace.
- Fear of Success Syndrome and How it Holds Women back – Success in work world conflicts with femininity – The need to have approval and affiliation.
- The Crying Game: The Pre-Cuing Technique – Men and women accuse women of playing crying game; a man’s level of discomfort skyrockets as the tears flow. Are women using tears as emotional blackmail or because she’s weak or emotional.
- Code Switching: Balancing Masculine and Feminine Styles – Best to use a combination of the masculine and feminine style.
- Go Home and Put on Some Clothes: Has Casual Friday Gone Over the Top? – Remember that you communicate a lot by your dress! We do still ‘judge a book by its cover’!

P.S. – I LOVED your last newsletter, and what you were saying about women and apologies. I often find myself doing EXACTLY THOSE THINGS! The validation is so… VALIDATING! Lately, one of my specific goals has been to STOP apologizing for everything I do and recognize the worth of my actions, words, and feelings, and to stop assigning unnecessary blame to myself. So the timing of your newsletter was impeccable! I notice now, I will say or do something WITHOUT an apology attached, and my husband will respond with “That’s OK…”. I have to keep pointing out to him that I don’t come with an apology attached to myself these days. You are so very good at what you do, and the voice is much appreciated on this end! Audrey –
You did a fantastic job this morning. Our ERG Leads have been hearing positive feedback from all over the world today. I am happy to write a testimonial for you. To hold you over, here are comments from today’s audience. We had roughly 375 attendees, however the reach of your message extends far beyond them. I’ve had many people ask me when we will send the replay out! “Great Presentation” “Awesome session!” “I hope this is being recorded and made mandatory for our leaders” “Thank you so much for having Audrey as a speaker. She identified so many key points I studied in Sociology a long time ago. It’s wonderful to have this difficult topic within a business environment” There is a thirst for this insight and a deep appetite for applying communication techniques throughout our business. You’ve given us knowledge and direction, and our panelists re-enforced their support of getting us there. Hi Audrey,
I wish my wife could have been at your talk yesterday; I told her all about it last night. She is an assertive woman and an excellent communicator, and maybe has been called that word that we referred to yesterday. Another thing that hit home yesterday was your mention of the dumbing down of women, and it was where my daughter is concerned. She is now 23, but when she was in junior high school it was brought to our attention by her science teacher, who was male. It almost floored me really, but I didn’t give it much attention at the time. But how could my daughter, whom had been raised by progressive thinking parents put on this submissive act? Oh well, water under the bridge, and I didn’t confront her about it. I do remember that my wife and I were confused about it. I hope to see you again also. I think one of your books might make a nice birthday present for my wife and/or daughter.

Audrey – thank you for a wonderful presentation on Smart Talk: Credibility, Power, and Communication. Your message really transcends gender, race etc… I appreciate your professional delivery, presentation, and the opportunity for class room discussion. My only regret is that we didn’t have more time

Audrey,
It was a pleasure to host you in “da burgh”. Your scores were 6.78 on your effectiveness as a speaker and 6.52 for the value of the content. (on a 7 point scale) Below is what i wrote on the IMS evaluation site. “Audrey is very professional, demonstrates a thorough knowledge on the topic, and most of all really engages everyone in the room. If I had to pick a comment to push it would be that a number of people wanted the seminar to last two days.” Mark Spear The Institute for Management Studies – Pittsburgh
Hi Audrey, I thoroughly enjoyed your talk today, and yes I am male. Part of my story is being raised partly by a single mother during the 1970’s, so maybe I am more sensitive to women’s issues than the average Joe. Thank you for adding more meaning to the term Androgyny than just the physical attributes of a person’s appearance for me; and the positive spin. One of my hobbies is the practice of Tai chi, and we speak of yin and yang. Yin is usually thought of as feminine and Yang masculine. I have learned to think of both as strengths, just different kinds. I have NEVER thought of women as the “weaker” sex because of the examples that I grew up with, namely my mother and grandmother, who are stories in themselves. Thank you for broadening my perspective a little today. I hope to read at least one of your books someday, and look forward to reading your newsletter or blog that I put my email on the list for. Take care,

Hi Dr. Nelson, I really enjoyed your presentation yesterday at the Fairlane Club. So many things I knew; so many things I did not know. Also, I exited without leaving my Session Feedback Form – it is attached. I also failed to ask if you would be providing any CE for yesterday’s most valuable session. Thank you again. I will definitely update my skills. I especially appreciated your comments about e-mail.

Hi Dr. Nelson,

Hi Audrey,
Thank you for your wonderful presentation today. I have received numerous comments about how entertaining and informative it was. The office is all “abuzz” with talk:
“Audrey was a great presenter, and I related to so much of what she said . . . I recognize it right now, today (in the office) and at home.” (man)
“You all did a great job today and Audrey was perfect. I believe everyone will take something helpful away from today’s discussion!” (man – one of Newmont’s top executives)
“Nice job to you and the team today – I found Audrey to be a great guest speaker and we are all still laughing at her honesty!” (woman) “I haven’t laughed that hard in so long . . . she was so right on in every single thing she said.” (women)
Obviously, the women laugh because they recognize what you say to be so true. Everyone LOVED it, Audrey, and I’d like to see what I can do to get you back. I hope you get lots of e-mails from the Newmont crowd and some book sales! I’ll send you more comments as I get them.
Best regards,

Audrey – I am happy to be your point person for this year and we do look forward to seeing you at the LMC program in June. ….you will once again be our closing presentation. I have always appreciated and admired the way you are able to keep a group in the room and involved up to that very last hour – especially after a very long 4 days preceding your presentation.

Hi Audrey, Your presentation today is just what we needed to regenerate and refocus off of the electronic era and back to the ‘human’ aspect. Thank you so very much! HR Level 3 Communications, LLC
Comments: In a world where speed seems so important – we have lost the true art of communication! Your session is spot on, it is not rocket science it is about going back to being human beings to human beings. Thank you Audrey – very good!
Thank you very much! Great course! Time to reflect and implement

Comments about Victors without Victims Will be able to provide a perspective of DR and what type of personality they have before going in to areas of conflict. Will use the skills to better understand how to say “no”, but still get the results I want. I deal with conflict quite a bit. Hopefully what I learned will be of good use for my next issue. The group exercises and discussions were very helpful in being able to visualize putting the learnings to task. It is always beneficial to learn and relearn ways to communicate with others and I will be able to utilize these learnings daily in all mediums of communication.

Audrey, I am very glad the seminar went as I suspected it would, excellent! Your scores were 6.8 for speaker effectiveness and 6.7 for content value, both out of a possible 7, these are excellent scores for one of our veteran educators, let alone a first timer. I have posted my evaluation on our private chairman’s page and look forward to sharing this with my colleagues at our conference next month. Hope you had a pleasant trip home and thank you for an awesome day

US Forest Service Missoula, MT Smart Talk April 2014
- My only complaint was the program was only 4 hours long. Such great hands on guidelines for ways to enhance our credibility through our communication style.
- Audrey is such a professional and really knows communication. I especially liked the Code Switching Quotient self-assessment. It helped me identify the possible gaps in my credibility. This should be a required course for anyone who wants to be taken seriously!
- I liked Audrey’s stories. They help me relate to the points being made about how we communicate credibility. We were all engaged and wished the program was longer.
Audrey presented The Art of Conscious Communication to EKS&H
“Overall I think it was a very good training program….and she is an engaging presenter who knows her stuff. I would recommend we use her again for communication oriented trainings. I liked the way she moved around the class-room to help keep folks engaged (although Boulder might have missed seeing her a bit?) She was very good with names – impressive really! Only making 1 mistake that I heard with a large group….I aspire to that. This was the first L3 session I have went to. Overall, I thought Audrey was a great speaker – the hour and a half flew by. Normally, I feel that trainings can drag on, not this one. I really liked her animation and energy level. She had great stories/examples to prove/show her point. When I left the training, I was glad I went and I am planning on looking at her books because she spoke of things that are a great reminder to us all.” Christine Voss EKS&H AUDIT/TAX/CONSULTING Learning and Development Senior

Hi Audrey, Thank you so much for being our DeltaDays Keynote speaker—you did a great job! You handled the situation like the pro you are. Be sure to let me know if you haven’t received your check by the end of the week.

Audrey conducted The Art of Conscious Communication for EKS&H. The following feedback from participants was provided by Christine Voss, Learning and Development Senior:
I loved it! I’d be interested in taking more of her courses.”
“I just wanted to express again my thanks for the session this morning with Dr. Nelson. I actually found it to be one of the most valuable training sessions I have attended in a long, long time; and would have had no trouble spending a full day learning from her.”
“I thought she did an amazing job of being fun, providing real live stories, very practical reminders. I found the class to be extremely valuable and worth my time. Great reminders as we head into busy season and forget to just pick up the phone or stop by someone’s office.”
“My main takeaway’s from the class are:
- Paraphrasing – I need to get better at it. Practice pulling the two impact words from a person’s statement and repeat them in a form of a question to the speaker (e.g. from what I understand, you want $3,000 dropped from your bill and want additional five interviews added as a change order).
- Use voicemail more frequently. While a face to face conversation is the best at conveying an idea and building trust, a phone call is second best. Email/texting/FB’ing is the least effective method of conveying an idea or building trust.
- Before sending an email, reread it and determine, “could/would I speak these words if I was in front of my intended recipient?”
- My number one takeaway: While her children were growing up, Audrey kept the TV off on weekdays. Neither of her children own a TV today. I love it.

Comments from He Speaks, She Speaks: What Different Things They Say Presented to Society of Human Resource Management:
- Presentation was great! Wish it was longer. Best spent hour and a half.
- Thank you! I really enjoyed the presentation. The biggest take away for me was the “fillers”..
- Absolutely incredible! Great content. Excellent examples. Fantastic interaction.
- I think all HR offices could benefit from this fresh perspective on communication.
- I was hesitant to come today because I wasn’t sure if it would be the blame game. It wasn’t that and was informative and helpful. Thank you.
- This was positive and thought provoking.
Hello Audrey, Thank you again for that wonderful presentation today. I was wondering if I could get a copy of the deck you used today. Audrey, Great seminar – thank you! What I liked best was the blend of serious matter of fact and humor. Also, videos and self assessments. Linda M. Murphy, PHR HR, Director FCC Services
What an excellent conference with real takeaways! I feel like it helped add to my communication toolkit for a variety of situations. Everyone in a professional setting – men and women alike should attend to better understand how to communicate and avoid unintended consequences of certain verbal and nonverbal communication styles. I enjoyed the session from beginning to end.

- Audrey’s presentation was great! She left me wanting to truly commit to becoming an effective listener. I appreciated all of the gender comparisons she provided in regards to communication as well. The concepts on how to listen and communicate with the opposite sex will be helpful in both my personal and work life.
- Listening to verbal and non-verbal cues is a big deal in our line of work with both customers and co-workers. I will work on making a habit of good, undifferentiated listening skills and communication skills across friends, family, co-workers and customers.
- This session gave me concrete skills to understand and address communication weaknesses expressed in my 360. I will use the listening skills to enhance my effectiveness with individuals and in groups.
- Good class. I would take it again.
I thought it was a great conference. I really liked that speakers were brought in from outside the company who could really make an impact and had relevant information to speak about and how to apply it to out lives. I absolutely loved Audrey Nelson’s presentation (and breakout session) and could have listened to her all day. She was extremely impactful and very engaing in both presentations. I took so much away from what she was saying and plan to use in my day to day communication. I also picked up her book and plan to read it. I would love to see her come back to the national sales meeting as I think the males in the company could benefit from her presentation as well (or some variation of it). I would also like to hear other presentations from her as well.

Hi Audrey, Thank you for your quick response. We are still talking today in the office about what an impact you had on the women at the meeting. One of my 30ish male colleagues asked what we talked about and I shared your comment that “women talk in code”. He looked at me like I had cracked the Rosetta Stone. It was hilarious, but he then acknowledged that he never seemed to get it right. I think we need a Part II with you and our men. Many thanks for your materials and references and thanks, too for taking the time to chat with me about this. It was a pleasure to meet you, too. I’d like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn. I heard you speak at a networking event at the Boulder Outlook Hotel last spring. Your talk titled “Dealing with Difficult People” continues to inform how I manage my clients and employees. Thank you! – Alex Jordan
Audrey,
You spoke at the SCWCC January luncheon in Colorado Springs, and I still hear comments about your fascinating and valuable presentation! I purchased the cd, and my husband couldn’t wait to listen. He recently interviewed several people for positions in his department, and he used his new skills to evaluate the applicants and to begin training the two new hires–one man and one woman!
Thank you for enriching my life.

Audrey Nelson has mastered the art of “capturing the room” while also engaging the participants before they even realize it! Her polished delivery draws you in while also educating, entertaining and improving the communication skills of the audience. Her dynamic seminars will leave a lasting positive improvement on the participants and I highly recommend her, whether your organization is looking to tweak or completely transform its communication style.
With regard to the book, The Gender Communication Handbook: Conquering conversational Collisions between Men and Women,:
Audrey addresses gender differences in a straight-forward and unapologetic manner. She reveals tendencies in gender communication that we all inherently “know” but, to our own detriment, sometimes ignore. The reader becomes conscious of subtle differences in gender communication styles that will hopefully prevent misunderstandings later in business and, more importantly, in life.
Thanks!

Greetings Audrey, In November I was in your Victors Without Victims course in Monterey as a part of the FCC Services LDP course. Just the other week I received my follow up to self ‘five nuggets’ letter that you have us write. I just want to say that I think this is an excellent practice. It’s a great way to revisit what we learned and what we found valuable that day. All too often we get back to work, cram the conference binder in the bookshelf with the others (with good intentions to review ‘when I’ve got time’, of course…) and never see it again. This simple reminder really did cause me to revisit some important things I learned that week. Just wanted to say thanks. Hope all is well with you.

Overall, I thought the program was…………4.71
Specific Reactions: What did you like best about the program?
- She is engaging.
- Great speaker.
- Presentation Style of speaker.
- The speaker’s expertise.
- Can use the insights in my work as Chief Judge as we now have as many woman judges as men.
- The speaker is fluid and fluent.
- Bring her back!
Audrey,
We did hear from one person who only listened on the phone that they will be watching the recording to see your facial expressions. The other comments I’ve received were that you were very engaging and kept their attention the entire time. I hope that we will be able to work with you in 2013. I also want you to know that we enjoyed the presentation and received very positive feedback.
Thank you, Stacy Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company Military Support Program Engineering Manager
Dear Audrey,
The CIO Women’s Forum and all who participated enjoyed your webinar presentation on He Speaks, She Speaks. Although there were a couple of technical difficulties at the start, I appreciate your understanding as we worked things out. I was also glad that we had a great question and answer session. Even the men spoke up, which is wonderful, considering many men were skeptical about the “Women’s” Forum in the beginning. We received great feedback from many who loved your presentation! Again, thank you for your superb presentation! We were delighted to have you speak for the CIO Women’s Forum.

Audrey, I just wanted to thank you again for taking the time to come out to IBM and speak to our Rocky Mountain Women’s Network Group. Your presentation was very well received. I heard several positive comments about it and it seemed that people left there with a renewed energy. You definitely have that affect on people, and that is why you are so good at what you do! Thank you again. It was a pleasure to see you again and I hope we have the opportunity to work together again sometime in the near future.

Audrey Nelson is a funny and engaging speaker. She has a way of explaining communications phenomena that is humorous and insightful. Her assessment of communications and our failure to give communications the priority that it deserves is very compelling. I especially love that she is willing to call out the differences in the ways women and men communicate as well as Gen X and Y behaviors. She is interesting and motivating! Audrey – Thank YOU so much for such a fantastic presentation! We had a packed house – standing room only and the presentation was so good that all the ‘standers’ stayed the entire hour. I didn’t get an official count but we had well over 80 people in attendance which is about double our normal turnout. Even better is the feedback I have received since the presentation. A number of those in attendance came to me personally to request more of your presentations and I’ve received emails as well to the same effect. Christine, I greatly appreciate the recommendation of bringing Audrey in for our first L3 of 2012. It was more successful than I had hoped it would be.

Audrey, Seeing you at the luncheon at Covidien was a treat and was very timely for me. There were pearls of wisdom that I plucked from your presentation, however, I am truly interested in knowing more about female empowerment. Do you have a book on this topic, or will you be presenting this topic in the Boulder area? Thank you for the positive impact that you make!

Dealing with conflict quickly and calmly to keep the situation positive for all parties is of utmost importance. Learning the different types of handling conflict and learning what the other person is can help alleviate the conflict quicker with better results. |
It’s important to recognize that doing nothing is actually doing something. By doing nothing about a situation you actually may be reinforcing the situation. |
A lot of info will be applied right now between coworkers and also with member borrowers. Great information. Wish I would have had it earlier.

Audrey, I just wanted to provide some feedback on the training you have provided our emerging leaders through the FCC Services LDP1 program. Over time I have noticed a trend. When past LDP1 participants refer to the most significant things they learned in that program – things that have made a significant impact on them professionally – your name comes up consistently! Your training provides new insights and helps participants understand communication from different perspectives – things that inspire people to make changes that help them communicate more effectively. So thank you for making a difference in our organization!

First of all, thank you for a vey informative and entertaining class at Stanford. I attended the Victors without Victims Class and purchased the CD set and the two books. You are welcome to use my comments for your newsletter and I can add to them. Your class should be mandatory for everyone. You presented practical information that can be easily applied to anyone’s work environment. Normally I don’t like audience participation but this class was so much fun and you made us all feel so comfortable. I just wish it hadn’t ended so soon. Looking forward to the next one and can’t wait to read the books, especially to learn how to talk so my husband will listen! Now if that happens, then you can consider yourself a success!

Dr. Audrey Nelson was fabulous. One of the best seminars I have attended.
Great seminar. Dr Nelson brought a lot of information forward I was unaware of. I loved the retro of the different generations.
I recently attended one of Audrey’s (Dr. Nelson’s) training seminars in Denver, Colorado covering generational management issues in the workplace. I found the session to be extremely helpful to me in understanding the dynamics of managing multi-generational workers in a complex work environment. Her mix of humor, case studies and educational content was perfect for the large class Dr. Nelson was teaching. Many of the interactive breakout sessions provided both helpful information, and the ability to connect with professionals from other industries. I would highly recommend Audrey as a trainer and speaker, and look forward to attending another of her sessions in the near future.

- I will use the tools learned to be a better listener. Removing distractions, maintaining eye contact and not formulating my response before the other person is finished talking. Remembering just how different male/female communication is.

Audrey’s feedback from the webinar for Inventyourfuture on Code Switching: How to Talk so Men will Listen
What one learning did you take away from today’s webinar? I liked the early specific example of how you respond of your idea is ignored and then someone says pretty much the same idea later on. How you could deal with it was a really great approach I’ll use if that happens to me again. (Team Lead, Apple)
To beware softening requests ‐ sometimes we don’t realize we’ve done it until after the fact. (MarketingManager, Symantec)
I learned that the “mode” I should be in most of the time should be assertive. That was a very good take away. This was a great topic! I think I want to listen to the replay because I suspect that I will pick up another good tip. (Project Manager, HP)
How to handle interruptions in meetings, and how to take back the floor (Finance Dept, Apple) It was pretty enlightening and made me feel more conscious when dealing with women at work or elsewhere.
Also some of the issues discussed apply in general and not just to women (in multicultural setup as the speaker mentioned). Not to be taken for granted at work place, and standing up for yourself, and speak up when it matters. (Functional Analyst, Apple)
Hi Audrey, Now that I’m back in the office wanted to quickly send a more proper response. I just wanted to say again that it was also a real pleasure working with you also. Your passion for what you do was evident at every program and it really made a difference to our audiences. To do what you do, for as long as you have done it – and still have this kind of passion for it – requires a genuine love of people, which always came through in your talks. I consider this to be one of the most successful speaker programs I’ve been involved with and I hope that we cross paths again one day as well. Thanks again for everything –

Hi Audrey,
I came across your blog “He Speaks, She Speaks” in Psychology Today as I was surfing for information — a study, book, article — on the theory that women have a hard time saying “no” to requests from family, friends, co-workers etc. The “we want to be helpful, all things to all people, make sure people like us” kind of thing. ALSO, having just discovered you I’m now a fan of your column (and books and YouTube videos) and would like to stay in touch. We’re always on the lookout for guests and great topics and you would be wonderful! I looked at your site and it’s uncanny how you’re describing the communications dynamics in my household to a “t.”. I can’t wait to get my hands on the book.
Thanks in advance for your help and interest,

A quick but heartfelt note of thanks for your fascinating conversation on last week’s Real Women on Health! show. I can tell you I’ve already put into practice some of the tips you provided. Here’s a link to the show if you’d like to listen or share on your blog.
We will stay in touch — thanks for your offer to be a resource — and hope we’ll have an opportunity to have you join us again. Til then, happy travels. We know one topic we can’t wait to cover is your visit to Korea!

Dear Dr. Nelson: I wanted to thank you again for presenting on March 3rd to the 10th Annual Women’s History Luncheon co-sponsored by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the Women in Science, Engineering and Mathematics Program (WISEM) at Colorado School of Mines. You did such a great job of talking about gender communication in a way that everyone, from our students to the President, could understand and appreciate. This was one of the largest Women’s History Month Luncheons with over 230 students, faculty, staff and NREL employees in attendance. So many people thanked me for bringing you to campus-you were a big hit! They have particularly commented on your ability to make this topic interesting, entertaining, and informative. Again, thank you for making the 2010 Women’s History Lecture Luncheon such a great event. I hope our paths cross again in the future!

Thank you Audrey. I thoroughly enjoyed our time together on air. The book is great. There are so many ways to change, to switch your coding! I have begun already to use them. My kids are an amazing experiment. They are the only kids I have so it’s hard for me to imagine parenting a singleton. Having two girls and a boy gives us the opportunity to see the very real differences that exist between the genders. For example, my son was walking around today with underpants on his head while his sisters were taking turns doing math problems. It was very good of you to join us Audrey. Thank you again.

Audrey, I was able to begin your book today, and it is just fantastic! It’s like discovering a whole new very important world that I didn’t really realize existed. What has been so powerful for me is having been able to talk with you, see your website, hear your voicemail message, in addition to reading your book. You embody the message in your book. There is a consistent underlying message of “Listen to me,” “I am worth listening to/It is important for you to listen to me” that I have never noticed before in the world. So many more things make sense.
You have a message that is very important to get out, and I’m so glad you have written this book. I’m looking forward to reading more.
Thank you for writing this book!

I personally want to thank you for participating in the Authors’ Luncheon on Saturday. I can’t tell you how many women and even men fell in love with you that afternoon. You were such a hit!! My personal friends said they could have listened to you for the entire luncheon. Again, thank you with deep appreciation. Sincerely, Joyce Fischer

Dear Dr. Audrey: I really, really thought your September 29 presentation was wonderful at the IABC Southern Region conference in Denver. You spoke so many truths….I have a co-worker who comes into my office and starts the conversation with, “Are you overwhelmed today?” My masculine side wants her to just tell me she needs help on a project, and I’ll figure out how to weave it in and get it accomplished. . I exited from your Denver session, told you how very, very much I got out of your presentation and then had to rush off to do my own presentation … before I could buy a copy of your book. Please help me overcome my sinful ways. Please tell me how big a check to write and where to send it. That was direct and masculine, but my feminine side told a story (above) first. I thought enough of your presentation that I forwarded your bio information to IABC headquarters in San Francisco. And I’ve read all of the articles on your website today, too.
Thanks for your support and causing me to think. –Connie Echard
I enjoyed meeting you and speaking with you yesterday and I look forward to reading your articles! I have to share with you-yesterday when I went to my appointment I was waiting and started talking to the manager (a male). Thank you so much for your talk last night. I put your “yes, no, yes” principle into practice this morning when I replied to a client who wanted me to send her my training materials so that she could train some folks in MN. It felt really empowering to say yes to my needs, no to her request and yes to the relationship. Thank you so much for your inspiration!!
– Belinda Hoole – President, Crisis Company, LLC
What a fantastic meeting. I have received so many nice emails about the energy in the room, and your “yes” sandwich was so helpful, I passed that on to Jenny this morning. You are simply amazing1 THANK YOU for your support! – Kathy Kelly – Personnel Profiles, IncHello Audrey, I wanted to congratulate you on a superb presentation last Thursday night at Boulder, BPW. What a great crowd we had! It was the biggest crowd we had since I started as program VP last May! We totaled around 80 attendees. You are just amazing and have such a great gift to relate to people and make them laugh. I just adore you! I received so many favorable comments from the women. I hope you will come back next year to speak to us again. Sincerely, – Tobi Hunt – Program VP – Boulder BPW
Hi Audrey:
I thought you’d get a kick out of this note…one of your former students works here at Sun and is thrilled to be attending your Seminar next week. It’s a small world. See below.
Best Regards, – Carol Neustadter – SUN
I will be attending…. wow, a blast from the past! Dr. Nelson was my professor at CU for a few undergrad classes. I have not heard her speak in a long while so this will be good. Thanks Sun Women for hosting such great events! Regards, – Justine Vigil-Tapia
Hey Audrey,
Just wanted you to know the accolades are coming in! You truly are an inspiration! – Jamie Hughes – SUN Microsystems
Hi Audrey, Thank you for a wonderful workshop yesterday. I look forward to signing up for your next class. Thanks, – Linh Dang – Stanford Hospital and ClinicsDear Audrey, I really enjoyed your seminar today, and I feel like the information you provided has given me perspective on how to manage some tough job and life issues I’m working on right now. I think the situation I’m trying to get a handle on is terribly complex and won’t be solved quickly or easily, but I do have some new ideas to bring to the table. Thank you! Thanks again, – Cathy Bellem – Grassroots Neighborhood Development, LLC
Thanks so much for presenting at the BPW. I am well into the book and done with the first CD. Already picking up the phone more rather than email. Enlightenment is amazing. I wrote this in my newsletter to my salespeople today giving highlights of the convention: You Don’t Say! Audrey Nelson was probably the most relevant to sales presenter there. Some highlights were “Email, what is not being said”. I guess I need to pick up the phone more! The difference between the sexes. For example, us girls will write, “Have a nice weekend”starting on Thursday. Men are bored with that. I bought her book and four tapes, because communication is what it’s all about. If we could get her to a Kaeser & Blair function (convention) it would be so amazing! Buy her tapes & books! Again, sincere thanks. Here’s to your Success, – Cyndi Stout, Promoz
Dear Audrey –
I attended a Colorado Human Resources luncheon a short time ago and you were the guest speaker. I truly enjoyed your stories of success and suggestions for “dealing” with people and left there thinking – WOW – wish I could have her talk with our physician board. I am the HR Manager for a clinic with 21 physicians and 160 employees.
– Karen Oxenford, PHR – Human Resource Manager – Panorama Orthopedics & Spine Center
Audrey I just received a call from the leader of our “virtual” classroom team. She said that your presentation is the model of how web classroom meetings should be conducted. You did a superb job of getting everyone involved with your exercises and your presentation with its stories was OUTSTANDING!
– Vicki McCarl – Corporate Planning – Xcel Energy –
Audrey, you have become the new buzz here at Xcel Energy. The women who attended your session have not stopped talking about it and you. Thanks again, Harryette– Harryette Johnson – CES Business Planning Consultant – Council for Diversity and Inclusion – Xcel Energy, Customer & Enterprise SolutionsDear Dr. Nelson, I had the pleasure of hearing you speak at last week’s Xcel Energy’s WIN seminar on dealing with difficult people. I got a lot out of it. I had already been practicing some coping skills and feel more empowered in my own ability to deal with annoying (if not difficult) people. I hope Vicki McCarl brings you back to discuss gender issues. I would definitely be interested in hearing your thoughts on that. I’m sure two hours won’t be enough to cover that topic. Please add me to your monthly newsletter. Thanks.
Audrey, Your Dealing with Difficult People training helped me as soon as I walked out of the classroom door. I have found myself thinking more and more about the payoffs that the difficult people in my life-circles expect and am being more adept at finding the right tools to cut off the payoffs. Recently I led the first meeting of a technical team of gas industry professionals – I am the chairperson of this diverse and too-large group and have already experienced several difficult conference calls. I am delighted to report that the meeting went off beautifully, and I owe much of my success in handling the situation to the skills I learned in your class – not being difficult myself but at the same time standing up for myself and my expertise, changing my previous responses to the difficult team members with tact and humor, and above all, being true to myself and my values. Thanks so much!
– Rosemarie Halchuk – Senior Gas Quality Engineer – Xcel Energy
Thank you very much for your valuable feedback. Your suggestions will benefit me greatly! I can’t thank you enough for your seminar and feedback. Best wishes for your future success!Warm Regards, – Karen Cadger – Accounts Payable – Xcel EnergyWOW! If Audrey can’t get us moving in the AM of Convention. I don’t know who can. Thank you so much for getting this to me. The only thing I can say is she looks so young to have done so much!!!. – President Colorado Business and Professional Women – Donna RifleyThanks so much for coming to the Denver Metro Chamber to speak with us.It’s always a joy to hear you! You are so fun and teach us so much! – Automated Lending – Dave Cook
We received great feedback from the Exploring Leadership Workshop concerning Audrey’s presentations. They suggested we add more of her next year and also suggested adding some of the topics into the first session of ELW in November.

– Wendy Reynolds – President, Boulder Business and Professional Women
It is Kim Ledger, I was at the FCS training in Spokane last week. I was sharing with my team leader how great you were. I told him several examples of the seminar. It was then I realized that he was getting and idea! So now I am leading a 20 min session on communication, to our 20 person team… Background: Our sales team is spread over 4 states we get together three times a year with our full team, which is mostly support staff in on main office, that work together daily. We are meeting the night before just as sales. I thought this would be a good time to bring some awareness to the effect communication can have on us. Especially those of us that are spread out and rely on e-mail , cell phone ect… I thought your information was great, and I loved that you kept things moving for us. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
– Kim Ledger – Country Home Loan Officer – Farm Credit Services of America
Congrats Audrey! As usual you are Awesome Audrey. We are so pleased to have you on our LDP faculty and an educational partner within the Farm Credit system. Thanks for always giving your best for this program and to our people.
Warm regards, – Cindy Knutson – Farm Credit Council Services
Thank you so much for presenting your program and coming to BPW. I hope everything went smoothly on your trip the next day. The women could not stop talking about your program and the superb information your shared. The feedback from the evening was just excellent! We also have some members that have personal situations presently that I hope will read your book, perhaps contract for personal coaching, and address their situations. The timing of your program at BPW was excellent. As a BPW sister, you are welcome any time and we hope you will want to visit again for a monthly program in 2007. My sister and girlfriend received their books this week as birthday gifts – they are ecstatic! I did not buy one for myself and have it signed so would love to take care of this when you have time. I have a little something for you as well, so let me know when you might have some time in your schedule for coffee. I would much rather provide this in person. Audrey, our paths shall continue to cross for this I am certain. – All my best, – Celia Krebs
Two minutes into the presentation I knew this was going to be the best class I’ve ever taken! Love your teaching style, tone, personal touch and how incredibly charismatic you are. Fantastic advice, content and observations. Love it. You were born to do this!
– Jodi Lemons – Staff RN – Ambulatory Treatment Unit – Stanford Hospital
I attended your presentation …and enjoyed your material. You are a dynamic presenter with a great message. Having just started reading your book, I can already tell that it is both interesting and informative; this seems to be a rare occurrence in literature anymore!
– Tiffany Hill, MBA, PsyD
Your presentation on Gender Communication was well received by the attendees, earning a score of 8.9 on a scale of 10! The following are comments from the attendees: “Audrey Nelson was outstanding. I don’t think I have heard a Ph.D. who was so grounded. I’d like to hear her for longer sessions.”
– On behalf of the California District Attorneys Association, thanks! – Jill Brusco
I found your class most informative. You will leave this world a better place than you found it. Thanks for all you do. – Mel Stonebraker – He Speaks, She Speaks Seminar – Boulder CountyGood course. Audrey is an expert. She knows how to interact with the audience and brings real issues to light. She identified the right words to use to diffuse a situation. She is well prepared, organized and an energetic presenter! This was my favorite session. She has great wit and the ability to hold our attention.-Victors without Victims: Managing Conflict for a Positive Outcome – Farm Credit Council Services
I cannot thank you enough for the wonderful, practical applications you brought to our conference. The feedback has been wonderful, and the attendees were really impacted! The only “complaints” were from the facilitators who were scheduled to present during the break out sessions you did and they could not attend yours! I have enjoyed getting to know you personally, and have such great respect for you professionally. The more I think about it, I believe that our different fields have much more in common than in the differences. We both are observers and communicators who have been able to look at communication on many levels. I have often claimed that if one can really understand a two year old, they can understand anyone. Adults are just the same. They only have learned not to bite with their teeth, but bite with their words.
Thanks again for everything, – Gayle Doughtery – National Coalition for Campus Children’s Centers
Thank you so much for coming and speaking at the Denver Chamber this morning. What you shared with us was wonderful. It will definitely help not only my business but also my relationship with my wife! I look forward to hearing you again. – Dave Cook – LoDo Residential MortgageDear Audrey, I just want to reiterate how great a job you did yesterday at the Chamber Expo. You’re professional, informative and “right on” presentation was perfect. I will recommend you to everyone I can think of. Sincerely, -Jeff Smith – Coaching TechnologiesHello Audrey, Thanks again for an educational and entertaining morning at the Chamber. I love when those two words can be in the same sentence! -Maureen McNamara – Growth Through Exploration – www.DynamicLearningInc.com
I run the WIN-SC (Women’s Information Network of Southern Colorado); you spoke at an event for my partner organization in Fort Collins, the WIN-NC, last February. Feedback from the event was very positive, and the WIN-NC core team recommended you as an excellent speaker choice.

Audrey, I just wanted to thank you for such an amazing seminar you held for us today here in Tampa. I am a legal secretary for Butler Pappas and really enjoyed hearing you speak. While others may not think it, I feel I struggle every single day in my communication skills, on both a personal and professional level. It’s very tiresome. My goal is to try and communicate properly while feeling confident in doing so. I’m hoping by reading your books and listening to your CD’s I can accomplish that. Thanks again, -Francie Moschenik – Butler, Pappas LLP – Tampa, Florida“Your name keeps coming up as a speaker people want to hear you again. We get that request all the time!” -Sherry Law – Colorado Human Resource Association P.S. Audrey will be the CHRA keynote October 18, 2006! Her topic is “Ouch that Hurts: Dealing with Difficult People!” Mark your calendars now!Audrey, I’ve already received a comment from a male engineer that you are definitely his wife’s favorite of speakers at past Engineers Week Dinners and he and his wife are delighted that you will be speaking at our Engineers Week Dinner again this year!-Connie H. King, Esq., P.E. – SWE-PPS Treasurer & PEC-PPC Vice President – Merrill, Anderson, King & Harris, LLC
I liked the examples of how the differences between men and women play out. The idea of gender flexing is very useful for folks in law enforcement, especially women! The video, power point presentation, handouts were all excellent. You know how to approach a sensitive topic with humor and powerful content. I like the way you slide the critical issues between humor. This was very interactive and informative. Lots to think about. You know your stuff.

It was by far the most important training of any kind that I have ever received. At the time I was both newly married and in a predominately male workforce. Your class not only helped me learn to adjust my communication style which helped me become more effective in the workforce, it brought a great deal of awareness to differences in communication styles between my husband and me. The understanding that came out of your class made what could have been a very painful experience of learning how to effectively communicate with each other not only easier but something we continue to find humor in to this day. – Fifteen years later I’m still in a male dominated workforce, still married and now a mother of a girl and a boy. Having a different perspective on life, I very much enjoyed taking your class again.” – Pam Hergett, Civil Engineer, United States Forest Service“Congrats Audrey! As usual you are Awesome Audrey. She really knows the field of communication. I have heard her speak many times and always want to hear more.” -J. Koehler, Hewlett-Packard“In the last four years of cross-cultural classes, Audrey’s gender communication class has consistently been our most popular offering. Every class is full and there is always a waiting list. I never have to worry about attendance. Audrey’s expertise in the field is evident from the beginning and it seems that participants can’t wait to recommend the class to their co-workers. We are fortunate to have someone of her caliber in our community. -Peter Salas, Boulder County, Colorado
“Audrey Nelson is supremely qualified to tackle the difficult and sensitive issues around gender inequity. Her professional training and work in this area is unparalleled. Her approach is honest and straight forward-this is not work for the faint-hearted. She tells it like it is for there is no other road to evolution. She can identify blindspots and problem people in the organization and offer real life solutions. Her positive impact on the women’s community in our company was unprecedented. She gave us a voice where there was fear and silence. I would not hesitate to recommend Audrey Nelson.
-Laura Webster, Cirent Semiconductor
“I find Audrey’s teaching style, combined with her course content, to be a great opportunity to learn about the aspects of diversity. The information is presented in a non-threatening manner with useful tips on how to make adjustments in the way we behave to become a more homogenous workforce.” -Jeffrey Rice, Lucent RE-USE Businesses
“Audrey Nelson’s presentation, “Speaking From a Position of Strength,” received rave reviews from our employees. Audrey’s style, expertise and professionalism were apparent throughout the presentation. She provided very worthwhile, common-sense tips which everyone appreciatiated and benefited from-terrific!”
-Jerri DeMar, IBM
“Dr. Audrey Nelson brings a wealth of extensive professional knowledge and expertise to her seminars. Even the toughest audiences rate her highly and appreciate her keen ability to relate complex concepts clearly. People think she is outstanding and request her again and again.”
-Dan Miller, Western Area Health Education Center
“Audrey’s presentation is the best I have encountered. Audrey’s delivery is logical, understandable and, most important, interesting.”
-Alana Robinson, Public Service Company of Colorado
“Audrey is certainly an expert in the field of diversity. Her breadth in the area is amazing and her abilities in the communication field are unmatched. Whether as a speaker or a leader in group sessions, she will help guide your organization through a cultural change process with a firm, but gentle hand.”
-Robert Koch, Cirent Semiconductor
“Move over, John Gray, of Mars and Venus fame, Boulder’s own Audrey Nelson PhD is on the scene! On the snowy morn of February 11th, I had the unexpected delight and pleasure of hearing Audrey present a talk on nonverbal communication between the sexes. I laughed so hard I cried! Audrey’s entertaining and intelligent beat on the way we communicate is uproarious because it is so true, it hurts. Once again, I am wowed by another local hero and this one in the realm of communication, where we need it most!
-Cindy Morris, MSW
“[Audrey was] wonderful! People can’t stop raving! Thank you again, and I’ll call you soon to set up another meeting!”
-Carol Colon, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield
“Thank you for another superb presentation at last weeks PHMA “Putting Your Best Foot Forward.” I find the subject your train absolutely fascinating and could indulge in your coaching for days. I attended one of your communication between the sexes presentations at the PHMA in Louisville, which I know I mentioned to you. However, first off it was the quality of your presentation that initially made me realize it was you. I have always remembered that presentation and quote it to many I meet.” -Ian Taylor, Professional Housing Management Association“I had the distinct pleasure of listening to you at the recent Colorado Human Resource Association monthly luncheon. While I could apply any number of adjectives to my impression of your presentation the best I can come up with was—WOW! I would tell you that the caliber of speakers at the luncheon is above average in general. You raised that bar significantly.” -Timothy A. Engelhart, President, Engelhart & Company“You were fabulous with the book discussion group. Many of the participants made an effort to tell me how much they enjoyed your interactive style. You are one of the most dynamic speakers I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. It was my honor to work with you and I sincerely hope our paths cross again. However, I would not want to face you as the opposing expert in a sexual harassment case. You would have the jury on the edge of their seats!” – Mike Sterchi – Lawyer, Federation of Corporate Counsel
