The Deenergizer: Look Closely at the People Around You

When you are in conversation with the de-energizer, you can begin to feel the life force leave your body. You feel depleted and deflated. I call them spirit robbers. If you begin to lose that spring in your step and don't know why, look at the people around you.

These people who spread their disparity like the plague are sometimes called jerks. One common variation is the prima donna who is excellent at their job and because of that, they get away with bad behavior. Unfortunately, management sometimes does not realize the dark cloud they form over everyone else, and the entire organization suffers.

A study conducted by Professor Spreitzer and her colleagues at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, found "the more people you interact with that you find de-energizing, the lower your performance." Worse, the presence of energizers does not cancel out this effect.

They further researched what tactics people could use to counter act the de-energizers; what can people do to buffer themselves?

Making sure your work has meaning and purpose will help cushion the negative effects of de-energizers. Work more frequently with energizers. Sign up for teams and projects with them.

Managers can help shift the balance toward positive energy by considering that type of behavior when conducting performance evaluations.
