People are like Dirt: Who do you Hang with at Work?

People are like dirt. They can either nourish you and help you grow as a person or they can stunt your growth and make you wilt and die.
 ........................................................................Plato

You have heard the expression: “Birds of a feather flock together.” Who are you associating with at work (outside of work counts too)? I have firsthand experience through my consulting work on the power of coalitions and the kind of judgments management makes by who associates with whom. Like minded people gravitate toward each other. Here are a few questions you can ask yourself:

  1. Does this person share the same work ethic?

  2. Does this person add to my positive repertoire-that is, ideas for productive ways of dealing with things at work?

  3. Does this person feel supportive?

  4. Do I enjoy being around them?

  5. What kind of reputation does this person have at work?
