Do You Feel My Pain? Why We Have Not Really Communicated Until We Have Empathized!

Many leading social psychologists and mental health experts have identified empathy as a critical component to “authentic” communication, over-all happiness, and plain old success both at home and work. We know that most successful managers, HR directors, electable politicians, most productive salespersons, insightful therapists and effective negotiators have the ability to empathize. Here are some key ideas to keep in mind:

  1. We can empathize most with people like us (are we surprised?)
  2. The more in touch you are with your feelings, the better you can empathize with others.
  3. Women tend to be better at empathy.
  4. Watch out for compassion fatigue (you empathize so much with people you are worn out emotionally)

What People are saying about Audrey

Hi, Audrey,
When I was a child in the 1960’s, the female character that stuck out for me was Polly Purebred in “Underdog.” She never did anything, but wait for Underdog to come save her, which sent a very negative message to me then.

Best,

Audrey,
I was one of the guests attending the "Women's Health Conference" in Sidney, Nebraska yesterday. Thank you. I enjoyed all three of your presentations, and look forward to your book about Jack & Jill!

Sincerely,
Mandy Vinton

Dr. Nelson,
I attended your seminars at the NA-YGN Conference in Chicago on Monday, May 5, 2008. Your lessons were inspiring and I cannot wait to put them into action! In order to help me do this, I would really appreciate copies of your presentations "The Art of Conscious Communication: A Talent for A Technical Age" and "Your Generation or Mine? Managing the Generation Mix”. Thank you for presenting. Your message was motivating!
Thank you for your time,
