Do You Want to Really Connect with Someone?
Try Empathy

When I was a communication undergrad I remember one of my professors making this claim: "True communication is empathy. Empathy is true communication." Empathy is not the same as sympathy-that is feeling sorry for someone. Empathy is understanding how they feel. We empathize best with people that are similar to us. So the challenge is practicing empathy with all people including those who may not be like us (same background, experience, age, gender, etc). It's harder to empathize with those who appear to possess more power, status, or resources. We say a lot by listening for other people's feelings and needs.

 Here are some guidelines:

  1. Empathize with silence by listening for the feelings and needs behind it.

  2. Don't offer advice. This is one of the biggest mistakes people make; remember hear the feelings and resist the urge to solve the problem.

  3. Check in with the other person by sharing what you think they are feeling. "Sounds like you are frustrated and disappointed."

Audrey, thank you so much for coming to Missoula again this year. It was so nice to work with you again, and I’ll certainly be talking to you again this fall. I know we didn’t get a whole lot of time to talk, but I was thrilled that you were able to watch that Smokejumper practice jump across the valley before you boarded your own plane!!!
